OSM2MIF is a lightweight utility developed by Nigel James that converts OpenStreetMap (OSM) data into MapInfo Interchange Format (MIF/MID). It reads OSM datasets and produces MapInfo-ready files that preserve feature geometry and key attributes, making it easy to bring community-sourced map data into MapInfo Professional and other GIS applications that support MIF/MID. The tool organizes OSM content into appropriate layers—such as points, lines, and polygons—so you can build basemaps, perform spatial analysis, and integrate OSM data into existing workflows with minimal preparation.

Key capabilities:

  • Converts OpenStreetMap data to MIF/MID for immediate use in MapInfo.
  • Retains core OSM tags as attribute fields.
  • Outputs points, lines, and polygons for clearer layer management.
  • Simple, repeatable workflow suitable for routine data updates.

Note: When using OSM data, be sure to comply with OpenStreetMap’s licensing and attribution requirements.

OSM2MIF is developed by Nigel James. The most popular version of this product among our users is 2.0. The name of the program executable file is osm2mif.exe.
